‘How to’? Continue planting during Autumn and Winter

If you have enjoyed growing during the spring and summer months, there’s no need to stop! There are many plants that can be grown during autumn and winter.

Spring flowering bulbs will give you plenty of colour and are great for filling your garden borders. We have a wide range of bulbs available in store now, get growing! There are also plants and trees that can be planted in the garden over the coming months to fill in any gaps. By planting them now they will get a head start and will be even more fabulous next year.

Planting in September

September is a good time to plant as the soil is still warm.

  • Delphinium – sow seeds indoors
  • Chrysanthemum – sow seeds indoors
  • Sweet pea – sow seeds indoors
  • Poppy – sow seeds straight in the ground
  • Hardy annuals – sow seeds straight in the ground
  • Plant out foxgloves, wallflowers, and pansies.
  • Plant perennials, trees, and shrubs.

Planting bulbs for a spring surprise will give you a much-needed colour boost in your garden after winter. This is the perfect month to plant bulbs such as daffodils, hyacinth, alliums and crocus in pots, lawns or borders.

  • Shrubs and perennials looking good this month – hebe, skimmia, grasses, hydrangea, gauras
  • Spring flowering bulbs – this is the perfect month to plant bulbs such as daffodils, hyacinth, alliums and crocus in pots, lawns or borders.
  • Do your hanging baskets and pots need a refresh? There are a huge range of autumn/winter tub and basket plants to bring them back to life and for added colour and interest through the winter. Includes bedding plants such as pansies and violas. Or longer lasting grasses and heuchera, hebes and skimmia. Keep them in pots or plant in the garden afterwards.
  • Plant out bedding plants that will flower next year, such as foxgloves, forget-me-nots and wallflowers
  • There are a number of seeds you can sow straight into the ground including Phacelia, Cow Parsley, Sweet woodruff and Cowslip. Look out for wildflower mixes too.

  • Geranium – sow seeds indoors
  • Laurentia – sow seeds indoors
  • Hardy Cyclamen – sow seeds indoors

  • Plant shrubs – for winter interest
  • Plant up winter containers with ivy, skimmia, grasses etc
