‘How to’? Choose the Right Fruit for a Small Garden

If you have a large garden or a small garden it’s always great to plant your own fruit trees or plants. This way you can grow fresh produce to eat straight from the plant – you and your children will love picking the fruit! There is a wide variety of trees and plants that can be grown in containers for a smaller space.

Patio Fruit Trees

It is now common practice for fruit trees to be grafted onto the roots of a related species with a more compact habit. This allows us to limit the height of a fruit tree and will allow us to grow them in a smaller space than if they were grown on their own roots.

Patio apple and pear trees are perfect for small spaces as they are grafted onto dwarfing rootstocks. This will reduce the ultimate size of the tree so that it will happily grow in a container on your patio.

Top tip: Select a self-fertile variety or grow in pairs to promote pollination and fruiting.

Blueberries

Blueberries are perfect for growing in pots if you plant them in ericaceous compost. They are considered to be self-fertile but planting two will typically produce a much larger crop.

As well as providing delicious fruits, blueberries also provide long-lasting interest with their attractive flowers and foliage that has a fiery autumn colour.

Figs

Fig trees are really trendy at the moment as they have great leaf patterns that will look great in your garden.

Figs will grow well in containers, plant in a large pot, and repot every three to five years when dormant. Make sure to water regularly so the compost doesn’t dry out and feed (once a week during the spring and summer).

Strawberries

Strawberries are one of the easiest fruits to grow and are perfect for growing in a range of containers to suit even the smallest spot on a balcony. Make the most of any vertical space by planting strawberries in hanging baskets or wall baskets.

Keep them well fed and watered so you’re rewarded with a bumper crop. Read our ‘How to‘ guide for some top tips.

These plants are fantastic for beginners as they are very easy to look after.

Raspberries

Raspberries are perfect for planting in pots as they are self-supporting. There are dwarf varieties available that will also produce a plentiful crop.

Indoor fruit

Lemon, lime, and orange trees can be grown in containers indoors and put outside during the summer. If you’d like to green up a conservatory or a blank space these citrus trees could be perfect. They provide interest all year round producing fragrant white flowers, followed by small fruits which take 4-6 months to reach full size.
