RHS Chelsea Planting Trends for 2022

The 2022 theme for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show (24th to 28th May) is ‘Rewilding Britain’. This year, gardeners exhibiting are being encouraged to ’embrace the wild’ and ‘bring back nature’ by using native species and carefully considering the wildlife and the environment. This is just up our street and we are delighted that the theme closely supports our own ‘Plant Hope’ campaign. We will be looking out for new ideas on how to transform a garden into a wildlife haven to share with our customers through our own inspirational displays.

What plants will feature?

We’ve heard that many gardens will feature native plants that benefit wildlife including wildflowers alongside plenty of flowering perennials and hedgerows, all brilliant for our pollinators.

Here’s a sneaky peek at one of our RHS Chelsea inspired display gardens, designed for shady areas. We’ve chosen lots of lush green foliage such as ferns and hosta, combined with native foxgloves and a burst of burgundy blooms from the astrantia, with a backdrop screen of birch trees.

Natural landscapes filled with native trees such as hawthorn, hazel, crab apple, weeping willow and hornbeam will feature strongly at Chelsea this year, providing many shades of green decorated with floral hints of pink and cream. Wild plants that you perhaps wouldn’t normally expect to find in a designer garden such as nettles, cow parsley, poppies and buttercups will add to the wildlife-friendly naturalistic theme. I imagine gardens will feature traditional English hedgerow rich in wildlife as I often see on a morning dog walk.

Gardens to look out for:

A Rewilding Britain Landscape – an artist’s impression

Show Gardens: A Rewilding Britain Landscape – designed by Urquhart & Hunt, this garden will tell the story of the re-introduction of elite eco-engineers, the beavers, in the south west. It will feature only native plants and will showcase how the beavers have made a huge impact on re-wilding and have helped reverse the loss of nature.

Wild Kitchen Garden

Container Gardens: The Wild Kitchen Garden – designed by Ann Treneman will show how you can grow wild edible plants and trees in up-cycled containers in a small urban garden. We are always telling your customers you can get growing almost anywhere, even in an upcycled container indoors.

All about Plants – This is a brand new category to look out for. They will be exceptionally small gardens that celebrate the positive power of plants on mental health and wellbeing. We have been communicating this message for a long time at Perrywood – we know spending time in the garden can really lift spirits and brighten mood as well as being great exercise. We are looking forward to seeing how these four gardens in the Great Pavilion will convey this.
