Perrywood Coffee Shop gets ‘chatty’ to combat loneliness!

Back in February, the Coffee Shop team launched their very own ‘social table’ to encourage customers who visited and dined alone to make new friends in an environment that they already felt comfortable in.

The idea is starting to take off and our Catering Manager, Jackie Newton will be sharing the concept with our favourite BBC Essex Radio Presenter, Sadie Nine tomorrow at 11.15 am on her BBC Radio Show that covers the top stories affecting Essex.

Perrywood’s social table takes place every day between 9 am and 11 am in the Coffee Shop so come along and make some new friends!

Perrywood is passionate about supporting the local community and its customers and wants to have a positive impact on their health and well being.  Research shows that loneliness and social isolation are harmful to our health: lacking social connections is a comparable risk factor for early death as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, and is worse for us than well-known risk factors such as obesity and physical inactivity. Loneliness increases the likelihood of mortality by 26%.

As part of our 2018 Health and Happiness Campaign, Perrywood Coffee Shop thought it would be a good idea to help our customers, many who are elderly, who visit alone, to meet other customers in a similar situation.

Chatty Cafe Scheme

We have also recently joined the Chatty Cafe Scheme  to raise awareness of our own social table and to help people local to Perrywood to find information about this new initiative more easily.

How you can help

We are determined to help those who are suffering from loneliness in Tiptree and the surrounding areas as part of our ongoing health and happiness campaign so please share with your friends and if you know somebody who is lonely – maybe an elderly neighbour, family member or friend – then let them know about our ‘social table’.

If you run a small creative group in Tiptree or the surrounding areas – maybe drawing or knitting and would like to share your talent with our customers who use our ‘Social Table’, please let us know, by email,  at:
